Concentration and Focus: The Key to Mental Toughness

Jan 28, 2025Belinda Gök

Our brain is a true marvel: feelings, emotions, and thoughts are coordinated in a matter of seconds, while countless pieces of information are absorbed and processed simultaneously. But sometimes it feels like the brain isn't working as focused as we'd like. The result: we get distracted very quickly, and our thoughts are everywhere but on what matters. Especially at work, this can quickly become a problem. This article explains what concentration exactly means, why it is important, and what we can do to increase focus and concentration in the long term.

Concentration and Focus - Why is it important?

Concentration and focus are two terms we encounter daily. Whether in professional life, during a conversation, or in many other everyday activities - we are always concentrated and focused on something. Every action, thought, or speech requires a form of concentration - be it conscious or unconscious. Concentration and focus are significant companions in our lives, without which we could not achieve even the smallest goals. But what exactly is concentration, and what can we imagine it to be? In a psychological context, "concentration is the ability to intentionally control actions and monitor their execution." Furthermore, the definition states that "concentration is, on the one hand, a state influenced by a multitude of conditions (environmental, organismic, cognitive, emotional, motivational, social), and on the other hand, the personality trait of concentration." 1

Gloria Mark, an American psychologist, reports in her studies that people can, on average, only spend 47 seconds in front of a screen before getting distracted. Moreover, it takes up to 25 minutes for us to fully focus on a task again. She also believes that the digital landscape, among other things, has caused us to lose focus. We are constantly checking our emails or social media. 2In the long run, this distraction can be harmful and hinder our mental flow of concentration.

What role do concentration and focus play in achieving resolutions?

We need concentration and focus to master everyday challenges and be successful in life. Focus can be seen as our drive that motivates us to make certain decisions and pursue paths in life. However, concentration and focus also play a central role in our mental health. Studies show that mindfulness (focusing on the here and now) can help reduce anxiety and depression, lower blood pressure, optimize sleep quality, and better manage stress. Especially in depression, mindfulness can be supportive as it helps to break negative thoughts. 3

Furthermore, it must be considered that a lack of focus can quickly impair our intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation describes acting for reasons such as enjoyment or pleasure in the activity or challenge, without external factors such as a reward being associated with it. This means that due to a lack of concentration and focus, we lose interest in achieving our goals, and our New Year's resolutions, as well as long-term projects, are doomed to fail.

Concentration difficulties and causes

Increasingly, people are experiencing concentration difficulties. This can have several reasons - both individual, such as stress, and external factors, such as constant noise and a too loud environment. Other causes of concentration difficulties can be:

  • Lack of sleep
  • Nutrient deficiency
  • Lack of exercise
  • Stress
  • Medical problems such as ADHD
  • Excessive media consumption
  • Multitasking in everyday life
  • Inner restlessness and anxiety disorders
  • Hormonal changes
  • Dehydration
  • Medication side effects

Tips for more concentration and focus in everyday life

Most problems that prevent us from concentrating optimally are self-inflicted - be it excessive consumption of social media, external distractions, or lack of sleep. We therefore have a significant influence on our concentration and focus. This realization allows us to change our habits by applying the following tips to increase our ability to concentrate and focus.

  • Identifying the disruptive factor:
Primarily, it is important to identify your personal disruptive factor. There may also be several disruptive factors that hinder your concentration flow. Examples include media overload, too many distracting stimuli, stressful situations, clutter, psychological stress, social environment, everyday pressure, high self-expectations, physical and mental ailments, or lack of routines in everyday life. By identifying your personal disruptive factors, you can address areas for improvement and rebuild your ability to concentrate.

  • Good sleep hygiene:
Adequate sleep and good sleep quality help your brain regenerate. This allows for better concentration. A recent study found that both too little and too much sleep are associated with poorer cognitive performance. An ideal sleep duration, however, ensures optimal cognitive performance. The perfect sleep duration is individual. Sleep deprivation can also lead to reduced memory performance and a shortened attention span and processing speed. 4 It is therefore important to cultivate your sleep quality and ensure sufficient sleep. A solution for this could be the intake of 5-HTP. The body needs 5-HTP for the production of serotonin. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that is converted into melatonin. Melatonin regulates the sleep-wake rhythm. How 5-HTP affects sleep can be read in our blog post Better sleep with 5-HTP. There you will also find some studies that highlight the connection between sleep and 5-HTP.

  • Brain training:
Mental performance can be significantly improved through daily and short, yet effective brain training sessions. This includes systematic exercises and games aimed at improving attention and concentration. Numerous apps and software support this approach. Examples of popular games include Sudoku, Memory, crossword puzzles, chess, brain teasers, and mental arithmetic. Brain training can be optimally integrated into everyday life and can be done occasionally between important tasks.

  • Concentration exercises:
Concentration exercises aim to improve attention and focus. These exercises are practical and include breathing techniques, physical exercises, mindfulness training, and balance exercises. With regular application, you will notice that your attention span is increased in the long term.

  • Mindfulness and meditation:
Mindfulness and meditation are two practices that harmonize perfectly when combined. Mindfulness can help increase attention, as focusing on the here and now is a suitable exercise to go within and achieve physical and mental calm. A few minutes a day are enough to perform these exercises. You just need to go to a preferred environment, close your eyes, and take deep breaths. Consciously perceive your surroundings and focus on your posture, your thoughts, and your mind. You can also use various breathing techniques such as the Wim Hof method. How this breathing exercise works and how it can help you can be read in our blog post The Wim Hof breathing technique: Breathing for a healthy body and mind.

  • Take time for yourself:
What could be better than withdrawing from the hustle and bustle and enjoying your time alone? Take the time you need to complete any pending tasks, meditate, sleep, exercise, or simply do what makes you happy. This way, you get to know yourself better and can become clear about your life goals and the paths you can take to achieve them. A positive side effect: taking the necessary time for yourself can also help reduce stress. In the article Why self-care is not selfishness, you will learn more about why time with yourself can be so valuable.

  • Regular exercise and nutrition plan:
Daily exercise and a balanced diet with sufficient nutrients are key to physical and mental functioning. Exercise helps improve blood circulation in the body and brain. This improves oxygen supply and concentration. A study found that physically inactive people suffer more often from cognitive decline (memory loss and confusion) than active people. 5 Therefore, make sure to integrate enough exercise into your daily routine and create a nutrition plan to better understand and support your balanced diet in the long term.

  • To-do lists:
Daily to-do lists can help you organize your day efficiently. You can adapt your tasks individually to your concentration phases and thus achieve full concentration. If you can concentrate more intensely and for longer in the morning, then complete the more complex tasks at this time of day. The easier tasks, which can also be completed more quickly, can then be moved to the afternoon. This way, you learn to work on a task in a structured and focused manner without being distracted by other to-dos.

  • Time management:
Time management is an important factor that helps us significantly increase concentration and focus. Important tasks are prioritized, and larger tasks are divided into several stages so that no overwhelm or pressure arises. Effective breaks between tasks allow for some breathing room and brain recovery. This way, we can set realistic goals and fully focus on them.

  • Capture milestones:
Dividing a large goal into smaller tasks feels less overwhelming for the brain. You can thus fully focus on the smaller steps leading to the goal. In addition, even the smallest successes are motivating and simplify the path to the desired goal. The milestones also provide information about the current status and prevent distractions to other details, which in turn increases concentration and focus.

  • Mood boards:
Mood boards are a visualized representation of goals. They can be individually designed - whether with pictures, quotes, symbols, digitally, or on paper. Mood boards help to focus on one's goals and make one's vision tangible. It is a creative method to have a clear idea of one's goals and to achieve them step by step.

  • Motivation strategies:
There are numerous motivation strategies that can help improve concentration and focus. You can put together your own motivation strategies and apply those that truly help you progress. Some examples include clear and realistic goal setting, rewards for reaching your milestones, positive affirmations, self-reflection, meditation, autogenic training, mindfulness, and stress management.

  • Fixed routines:
Planning routines helps to approach the day in a more structured and planned way. Due to the fixed planning and task distribution, the brain knows what's next. This also reduces stress, as the brain is led to believe that no appointments or tasks will be forgotten, and therefore no unforeseen bottlenecks will occur. This promotes mental clarity and full focus on individual tasks.

  • Group therapies:
Exchanging with other people can often help overcome emotional blockages and strengthen self-confidence. Inner blockages are often the reason why the brain cannot focus on certain things. This inhibits concentration and negatively affects your performance in every respect. In addition, social gatherings can often increase motivation and reduce stress, which in turn has a positive effect on memory performance and concentration.

    Concentration-promoting nutrients
In addition to the many strategies that can improve concentration and focus, there are also dietary supplements that can support these due to their nutritional and plant-based ingredients.

  • N°4 FOCUS:
This product was developed to promote your concentration and attention. N°4 FOCUS is enriched with green tea extract, which contains polyphenols and theanine. Overall, green tea is known for its focusing properties. Theanine is perceived as calming and is considered to promote concentration. Polyphenols are secondary plant compounds that have antioxidant properties.

Lion's Mane: The contained medicinal mushroom Lion's Mane proved effective in improving cognitive performance, according to a study. The results of the study showed that taking Lion's Mane improved performance speed and reduced subjective stress in young adults. 6

CDP-Choline and L-Tyrosine CDP-Choline (Citicoline) play a central role in brain metabolism. It is known to increase mental performance and attention. L-Tyrosine, on the other hand, is an amino acid that the body needs for the production of neurotransmitters like adrenaline. L-Tyrosine is also said to improve concentration and focus.

Ginseng, Guarana, and Ginkgo Biloba extracts: Ginseng, Guarana, and Ginkgo are plant extracts that have been traditionally used for centuries to support concentration. A subgroup meta-analysis showed that Guarana led to faster performance in reaction time compared to a placebo. 7

Vitamins B6, B12, and Biotin: These B vitamins contribute to normal energy metabolism, promote the function of a normal nervous system, and are therefore indispensable for supporting mental performance and cognitive functions.

Zinc: Zinc also contributes to the maintenance of normal cognitive function. In a study conducted on overweight women, one group received 30 mg of zinc and the other a placebo. The results showed that women from the zinc group performed better on cognitive tests (such as the Mini-Mental State Test and the Stroop Test) than the placebo group. 8

  • Siberian Ginseng Capsules: Siberian Ginseng is a plant species and is considered an adaptogen. Adaptogens have been used since ancient times to relieve stress, strengthen the immune system, counteract inflammation, and promote concentration. A study investigated whether Siberian Ginseng can help people with chronic fatigue. It is important to mention that the participants had been suffering from severe exhaustion for at least 6 months. The participants were divided into two groups, with one group receiving Siberian Ginseng and the other group receiving a placebo. It was observed that after two months, Siberian Ginseng was more effective than the placebo in participants who suffered less severely from fatigue. Even in participants who had been suffering from fatigue for more than 5 years, the intake was helpful, but less clear-cut. 9 By reducing fatigue and exhaustion, the ability to concentrate and attention span are increased.

Conclusion

In conclusion, many reasons can cause us to lose our concentration and mental focus. It is important to identify the trigger so that these disruptive factors can be bypassed or avoided. Daily exercise, brain training, and a balanced diet, as well as supportive dietary supplements, help you regain your mental strength.
